The municipality has been working with three providers to investigate options: Bell, Eastlink and Island Tel. Some improvements are to be installed for The Gables community, which may drive improvements within Stanley Bridge and Seawood. Should have a plan or see some changes within the following year. Matt also acting as interim chair of the Sewer Utility so he spoke on the need to increase the fees by 24% for maintenance. This is primarily due to costs not keeping up to fees. Additional maintenance is needed on the generator, lagoon upgrades, etc. 80K deficit in costs and they anticipate $4MM in maintenance over the next 4 years. The increase is based on usage only and does not apply to the infrastructure fee levied to Seawood Residents. Matt invited everyone to attend the Annual Municipality Meeting this coming Monday, August 8th at 7 pm. They will be discussing a new plan for the community to promote beautification and growth. Old plan is 8-9 years old and they would like input. They are also anticipating some changes to the Municipalities Act. They are not sure of what changes are coming but if significant will have meetings and communications to residents.
- Edmond Richard (Planning Commission): They will be presenting a detailed report at the Annual Meeting where they will make recommendations on Zoning, Signage and Permits. The Board has a lot of expertise and experience. Peter Fullerton has been nominated to sit on the board moving forward.
- Brenda MacDonald: Brenda said it’s a pleasure to work with everyone. She reminded us that her role is to work within the rules and regulations, which may not keep everyone happy, but keep in mind, in most cases she is just the messenger. There are 14 building permits left for development in the Seawood Estates community in terms of the Sewer Infrastructure.

President's Report 2016
SEAL Presidents Report 2016
The strength of any association comes from the collective strengths of its members.
I see SEAL as being a lobby group working on any number of topics dealing with the quality of life within Seawood Estates.
This being my first year as President I have relied greatly on the historical knowledge of the Executive Committee. It has been a learning experience for me and I hope to get to know all members on a personal level in the coming year.
I would like to thank the executive, Dick Rowell Past President, John Boyne Vice President, Bob Waugh Treasurer, Joe Kaczmarczyk Full time Resident Rep and Diane Crozier Secretary. These volunteers have done much work on behalf of the members behalf during the past year.
The Executive has met four times in the past year and minutes of these meetings are available on request. Topics discussed ranged from committee involvement, membership drive, roads, sewage fees, internet, area beautification, the annual meeting and the list goes on and on.
We prepared a submission in response to an increase in sewer fees for 2016 on behalf of SEAL which was submitted to IRAC in December; a copy of which as well as the response is available on request.
Throughout the year I have had several meetings with Seawood Inc. to discuss road conditions and signage. As you may know 2400 feet of Bayview Dr. had four inches of compacted shale resurfaced this past spring. I continue to press the need for a road plan or list of road priorities to be completed as the money becomes available. The Spring scraping was one of the best in my short time here within Seawood and it will be done again in the fall in preparation for fall and winter conditions.
A Road and Sign Committee has come together and you may have noticed the work to straighten some of the existing signage and in the coming weeks you will be seeing additional safety signage going up as well. Several street signs have gone missing and those are due to be replaced later this year. I think it important to note at this point that the speed limit within Seawood is 25KPH and for children’s safety and dust concerns this must be adhered to. It is your responsibility to make sure your guests and renters are aware of this speed limit and I ask that we all do our best to follow this limit.
To keep members informed of happenings within Seawood we issue two email updates as well as any others as need be. These Emails are sent to members of SEAL and I found in the past year a number of email addresses bounced back as invalid. These Email addresses are drawn from the SEAL registration list and we ask that you keep us up to date with any changes in your contact information. One never knows when a topic of importance caould arise and a discussion or vote may be needed.
Only paid members of SEAL have the right to vote and the Executive has undertaken a membership drive this summer to bring the numbers up to where they have been in the past. We urge you to be a member and talk with you neighbours about the importance of being a member. We will be voting on the membership fee for 2017 later today but I can tell you the recommendation from the Executive is that this be set at $20 for the year.
A great deal of work has been going into creating a new and up to date directory with all the current information we have at this time. An updated version will be sent out electronically later with all information collected during the Annual Meeting and all information returned my male from lot owners.
I have had several meetings with Brenda MacDonald, Cavendish Municipality Administrator, in regards to internet service available within Seawood as this continues to be a topic of concern amongst residents.
You will notice six additional benches have been placed around Seawood for residents and guests who may be out for a walk. It is important to work together towards the beautification of Seawood Estates and for this to be an inviting place to new and potential residents. There are many lots available for construction within Seawood and all fees collected will help with road maintenance etc.
It is important to note some work has been done on the Pickering Point pathway and it is an inviting place to go sit and look out over the water. I want to thank these gentlemen for taking this task upon themselves and making it a nice place to relax.
As you may know we have attempted to set up several committees to investigate different topics within Seawood. While the response was limited I once again want to ask anyone interested in becoming active in their community to contact a member of the executive. I believe one thing that is lacking here in Seawood is a “Sense of Community” and that comes by having residents volunteer and becoming actively connected to their community.
We do have a book club that meets regularly and thanks to Judy Rowell for taking that activity upon herself. In the past we have had a Poker Evening and a golf day.
One idea brought forth is that of a community Yard Sale put on by Seawood Residents and open to all North Shore residents with the funds being used for beautification within Seawood. In the past stairs leading to the beach have been built and wouldn’t it be nice to see something like a Gazebo in a public area for residents use.
If you have an idea for an activity or would like to restart one of the past activities for next year please contact one of the executive members and we will do whatever we can to make it a reality.
As I said in my opening Seawood is only as strong as its residents and I hope you all will become involved in your community in one way or another during the coming year.
