President’s Report – submitted by Dick Rowell

This report marks the 9th and last year as President of SEAL. For my last report I will take a different approach than past reports—it will be much shorter.

A few highlights
  1. Past 6 years attendance at Annual Meeting averaged approximately 40 members—approximately 10 notifications of inability to attend—and last 3 years approximately 18 proxy votes
Total = 68

  1. Balance in Treasury about 10 times that of 9 years ago.

  1. Development of Community Spirit within Seawood Estates & The Resort Municipality.

  1. Two members of SEAL are now on the Resort Municipality  Council (Matthew Jelley - Chairperson, & Edmond Richard - Chair of Planning Committee)

  1. Enabling owners to become an Incorporated Body i.e. Seawood Estates Association Limited (SEAL). Providing a Legal status for a duly elected Board of Directors to legally represent all members. Example: Island Regulatory & Appeals Commission. Commission administers a number of provincial statutes dealing with economic regulation and hears appeals under provincial planning, tax and residential rental property legislation.

The Future
  1. Open & Park Areas in Seawood Estates (update in old business)

  1. Sale of Seawood Estates (brief review of web site)

Finally

Recognitions:
  1. Gerry & Annis Smith  (a) for his contributions to SEPOA—Seawood Estates Property Owners Assoc. –Treasurer and prolific volunteer. We bought this lot in 1969—fast forward to 2003 (b) Personal Note Judy and I most likely would not be here today if Gerry didn’t suggest the name of a builder (Kenny (Taz) Gallant) if we ever decided to build on this lot. We left that summer with a contract to build this home.
  2. Brenda MacDonald (Administrator for Resort Municipality) Where to begin - 1st year working to find a way to build our dream home—lots of phone calls, emails etc. 2nd approval to build and again lots of phone calls and emails. As President worked continuously throughout the year with Brenda. (a) always available 24-7 (b) extremely knowledgeable (c) always follows the rules (d) always friendly and a smile and on a personal level Judy & I thank Brenda and her husband Cyrus for accepting us into their family. And oh yeah she makes a fabulous ice cream cake.
  3. SEAL Board of Directors—(a)Heather Fenske—rehab from health issues and couldn’t be here for the meeting and thank her for the many years as Secretary of SEAL. Because of personal changes Heather decided to not submit her name for another term. (b) Grant Petersen who has served many years as the full-time resident. Grant was always willing to jump into any project and quick to respond to Board related issues. Grant I will miss your presence on the Board and wish you and Deana the best and good health. (c) I want to thank John Boyne, & Bob Waugh for agreeing to continue serving on the Board. They will bring stability to the new Board, a deep commitment to continue to promote Seawood Estates and improvement to the quality of life. Bob adds a lot more height to the Board.
  4. Residents of Seawood Estates—Judy and I feel very fortunate to have made so many friends and acquaintances. Thank you for: supporting SEAL, for donating your time and contributions to worthwhile projects, for helping neighbours in need of help, and for helping to make Seawood Estates a wonderful place to live.
  5. I might have had the title of President but Judy was: (a) the boss, (b) the brains (c) idea person (d) motivator (e) although a self-professed shy person-- the social director (f) organizer  Wait a minute –then what did I do?? I think you all get the picture.

  1. Old Business
  • Update on Resort Municipality 5-year Bylaw Review - specifically status of SEAL Board of Director’s September 17,2009 submission.
Matthew Jelly commented the Municipality is not able to give pre clearance on our submission as no application has been made to modify use of common areas, however due to the way Seawood Estates was developed/sold with a variety of covenants on deeds, any changes to open areas would require a vote of unanimity in order to proceed, which would be very unlikely.   Any requests for changes would be communicated to owners from Brenda at the municipality office so that a vote could be taken.
  • Use of Gas Tax Funds to help with road upgrade in Seawood Estates.
Joe Kaczmarczyk updated the group with regard to SEAL’s request to obtain an allocation from the $500K in Gas Tax funding to Municipality.  As our roads are deemed to be private they are not eligible under this funding which is to be used for public projects only.

  1. New Business
    1. Report from Seawood Estates Inc:  No report was received and although invited, no representative of Seawood Estates was in attendance.
    2. Sale of Seawood Estates:  Present owner has listed their property for sale.  Listing can be viewed on the webpage of Kaye Rogers.
    3. Book Club:  Judy Rowell provided an update on another successful year with the book club.  Attendance continued to increase with an average of 13 people at meetings.  Interests have expanded to include biking.
    4. Poker:  Greg Ergong-Weider updated the group that poker is every Wednesday at 155 Seawood Drive.   With .05 cent bets, no one is getting rich, everyone is having a good time.
    5. Other Business:
      • Barry Stickings brought up that he continues to notice a lack of small animals around his property and if anyone is interfering with these animals to please desist.
      • John Boyne expressed Thanks on behalf of Seawood Estates residents to Dick Rowell for his dedication and passion during his tenure as president.
      • Reminder by Brenda MacDonald of the Resort Municipality meeting to be held  on August 10, 2015 at 7:00pm.
    6.  Election of New SEAL Board of Directors:
Dick Rowell asked if there were any nominations from attendees for any positions on the board.  No new nominations were offered.
